Jane's favourite artist...

"The artist whose work really appeals to my personal taste is Robert Bateman and the wonderful wildlife illustrations he captures on canvas.

The detail in his pictures is so accurate, you could almost reach out and touch the creature or bird he has painted. I love nature and he portrays nature at its very best."

- Jane

Ley's Favourite Artist.....

"For me great art is not only a work, which immediately grabs your senses and shakes them up but one which endures. Those images that you go back to time and time again because you see or sense something different in the picture each time you look.

One artist who does this time and time again is Edward Hopper. At first his paintings may look a little empty, - but it is the expansive 'room' in his paintings which hold the enigmatic force of his work. He situates objects and characters in strange, isolated positions so that you make up the story of the image. Brilliant!"

Pomegranate staff's favourite artists and why...

Over the next few weeks I'll be getting some of the Pomegranate Europe staff to write about their favourite artists. We'll start off with mine....

"
My taste in art is always changing as I’m exposed to such a variety working here at Pomegranate. I believe art needs to be interesting, whether it’s the image itself or the thoughts provoked by it. At the moment the artist I’m enjoying most is Escher. I find the optical illusions within his work keep me both entertained and puzzled. With the repeating, transforming patterns and never ending staircases you can really immerse yourself in the image and get lost in his disobedience to gravity and physics." - Dan (me)

Like Escher? Don't like Escher? Would like to say a few words on your own favourite artist? - Please don't hesitate to leave us a comment. - We love to hear your opinions on art.

Quiz Answer 3.

Virginia Woolf (English, 1882 - 1941)
The daughter of renowned literary critic Leslie Stephen, Virginia Woolf grew up surrounded by such influential Victorian authors as Henry James, Lord Alfred Tennyson, and George Eliot, so it is not surprising that she, too, tried her hand at writing, to great success. In 1912 she married Leonard Woolf, a writer and together they founded Hogart Press, which would later publish works by T.S. Eliot, Maxim Gorky, and E.M. Forster.

Woolf has been hailed as a leading innovator of modernist fiction due to her experimental work with stream of consciousness and fractured narrative in her novels, most notably Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse. Her famous essay "a room of one's own" remains one of the most important texts of contemporary feminism.

From childhood, Woolf suffered from periods of severe depression, and in 1941 she drowned herself after writing a note to her husband-"I feel certain that I am going mad again: I feel we can't go through another of those terrible times... I can't fight it any longer."

Quiz Answer 2.

Answer 2.

Emily Bront

One of a trio of sisters famous for their literary talents, Emily Brontë authored just one novel during her short life, but it has since become a classic of English literature. The fifth of six children, she grew up on the lonely moors of Yorkshire, where her father was the rector. After the death of their mother in 1821, the children entertained themselves by imagining fantasy worlds and writing down their creations in notebooks.

Educated mostly at home, Emily worked as a governess and flirted with the idea of opening a school, going as far as Brussels to study languages and school management, but she eventually dropped her plans. Her younger sister Anne discovered a book of verse Emily had written and convinced her sisters to publish a book of poetry. This led each sister to her own novelistic pursuits, resulting in Emily's haunting tale of love and revenge, Wuthering Heights, published in 1847. Only thirty years old, Emily died of tuberculosis the next year.

Answer to question 1.

Jane Austen (English, 1775 - 1817)

Today one of the most celebrated writers of the Western canon, Jane Austen published her novels anonymously to avoid the tarnished reputation of a woman writer. The seventh of eight children, Austen was born in Hampshire, England, and spent most of her life close to home. She began writing as a child to amuse herself and her family. Known for their perfect form, her books - including Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park - Infuse everyday, commonplace events with humor, irony, and drama. Her heroines are bright, moral young women who struggle for love and happiness in a society where men inherit familial wealth and marriage determines social status.

Though her characters ultimately achieve satisfaction, Austen - who never married - was no true romantic: "I could not seriously sit down to write a serious romance under any other motive than to save my life."

I'll post the first question now, and the answer in a weeks time. Good luck!

We wish you a merry.....

OK, so it's not quite Christmas yet!

Nevertheless, the brand new Pomegranate Christmas Catalogue is almost ready.

Christmas 2006 was the first that the UK and Europe had seen of the Pomegranate Christmas range for some time. The stunning, festive cards are back again this year and from the look of the current interest, they will indeed be here to stay! That’s not surprising when you see the catalogue. Many of Pomegranate’s top artists can be found with a festive twist in the Christmas range. From Kliban’s Cats playing festive games and trying to stay warm, to Edward Gorey’s darker views on Christmas, Santa, and the festive period.

However, the Christmas range is not only about our acclaimed artist’s work. We also publish a huge selection of Christmas cards featuring beautiful photography of the natural world at Christmas and the amazing animals within it, in association with Sierra Club. You’ll find Penguins, Polar Bears and Arctic Foxes, all posing for these stunning images, which can all be found in the back of the catalogue. A portion of the proceeds from all Sierra Club sales goes towards preserving and protecting the planet.

Christmas card catalogues will be available from April onwards, and we are always happy to take advanced orders in preparation for Christmas. We offer the individual cards either as singles (in cellophane bag, with envelope) or in boxes of 12 with envelopes.

2008 Calendars

2006 has just finished and we’re already raring to go with our superb 2008 calendar range. This year there have been loads of additions, some great new titles and even a whole new format!

Our new format is our Postcard planner. Imagine a pocket / handbag diary, page per week, month grids throughout, then between each week slot a charming detachable postcard featuring the works of Edward Gorey, Robert Crumb or Charles Addams. This is a promising range that will undoubtedly be expanded next year.

We have three stunning new wall calendars, published in cooperation with the “Sacred” exhibition at the British Library (April – September 2007). The Sacred collection will include three calendars, one on each the Torah, the Qur’an and the Bible. These calendars focus on not only the words that these sacred documents hold, but also the decoration and typography of their worshipped pages.

We’ve added some beautiful new fine art titles, most notably the new wall calendar from Arthur Rackham. Known for his illustrations in such children’s classics as “wind in the willows” and “Alice in wonderland,” Rackham’s fantasy illustrations have been cherished by many generations of children and adults alike.

There will be a great selection of speciality format calendars for 2008,these are mostly specialist titles that for the right person will be totally essential. For example our Yoga planner is perfect for any Yoga practitioner and student, even a complete beginner will find the tips, positions and suggestions in this diary, a great way to get into Yoga.

2008 will also see first editions of our P+ Business planner, Jewish Woman’s planner and the busy parents planner. These new titles can be found alongside last year’s favourites like the Herbal Journal and the Ecological Diary.

We will have 2008 Calendar catalogues by the beginning of March, if you would like a copy please let us know.
