We Love Him!

EDWARD GOREY

Born in Chicago in 1925, Edward St. John Gorey reputedly began drawing at the age of eighteen months. Some time later, he was drafted into the army and assigned to the Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. His job there, he says, was to test poison gas.

In 1950, Gorey saw his art in print for the first time--as the September cover for the "Harvard Advocate," his college publication, and endpapers for Merrill Moore's "Illegitimate Sonnets."

A founding member of the Poets Theater (with Frank O'Hara, V. R. Lang, John Ashbery, and Alison Lurie), Gorey designed sets for the first play the group presented--O'Hara's "Try, Try" (1951). Between 1953 and 1963, Gorey worked as a staff artist and art director for Doubleday and Random House. His "Doubtful Guest" was published by Diogenes Verlag of Zurich, the first of many of the artist's works to be published by that company. In 1965, Gorey held his first major exhibition at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California.

When Gorey's first anthology, "Amphigorey," was published in the early seventies, it was chosen by "The New York Times Book Review" as one of the five most noteworthy art books of the year. Gorey designed sets and costumes for the 1977 Broadway production of "Dracula." His costume design earned him a Tony award. In 1980, an animated sequence of Gorey's work was used for the first time on the PBS television show "Mystery!" Nineteen years later, the series and the sequence are still going strong.

Edward Gorey left New York for good in 1983. He lived in Massachusetts with six cats and continued to produce his darkly hilarious work until his death, April 15, 2000. Gorey's drawings are widely collected and exhibited at notorious institutions throughout the world.

Drawn from "Goreyography" by Henry Toledano (Word Play Publications, San Francisco, 1996).

NEW: Beautiful Japanese Triptych Notecards

In mid-nineteenth-century Japan, woodblock prints reached their height of commercial popularity with the emergence of the ukiyo-e genre. Sold at prices accessible to the middle class, ukiyo-e prints eschewed highbrow subjects in favor of images depicting modern urban life: contemporary actors in kabuki plays, famous courtesans and sumo wrestlers, popular recreational pastimes, and landscapes, often featuring premier tourist attractions. Like today's celebrity magazines at supermarket checkout counters, these prints were produced in volume and snapped up by the masses. Though many critics once sniffed at this populist art, historians now recognize the ukiyo-e masters as among the greatest artists in Japanese history.

Among the many different "schools"—i.e., master-student lineages—of ukiyo-e printmakers, the Utagawa school was by far the most successful. The four triptychs featured in this notecard assortment are all by revered Utagawa-school masters: Hiroshige I (1797–1858), Hiroshige II (1826–1869), and, collaborating on two of the included works, Kunisada I (1786–1864).

All about Kliban!

B. Kliban (1935-1990), was arguably the first to put now outrageously popular cat cartooning in the fore, the artist who opened up doors for the likes of Gary Larsen, Jim Davis, and others of feline-connected fame.

Kliban studied painting and design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and later at Cooper Un
ion in New York City. In the mid 1950s, he travelled and painted in Europe for a couple years, spending so much time at the Uffizi in Florence that he said he felt as if he lived there. He kept a daily journal of watercolours of abstract heads; he drew incessantly and developed a masterful hand, especially as related to figure drawing. After he returned to the States, he mounted a motorcycle and road to the West Coast, arriving first in southern California and eventually settling in Marin County, north of San Francisco.

Determining after a short time that supporting himself as a painter was simply not feasible, Kliban took a variety of odd jobs, including one drawing showgirls at a club called Mr. Wonderful in San Francisco's "red-light" district. In his boredom at Mr. Wonderful's he began inventing satirical, biting, hilarious cartoons and drawing them on cocktail napkins. The cartoons offered a no-holds-barred look at every type of person and human situation--here Kliban offered his perspective on religion, on government, history, and more.

Responding to a 1962 ad in Playboy for contributions from cartoonists, Kliban was "discovered" by the magazine. Playboy entered into a long-standing relationship with Kliban, continuing to publish his work for the next thirty years.

So how did Cat enter the picture?

Kliban loved cats (no surprise there) and usually had several living with him. In the early '70s, four "stripers" were hanging out with Kliban, demanding his attention as he was doodling and thinking up ideas for Playboy. Kliban's editor at Playboy saw the drawings of cats that resulted from this "session" and asked permission to show them to a literary agent. A deal was made with a publisher and Cat was born to the world.

The first book (called simply, Cat) was published in 1975 and Kliban became an overnight cartoon sensation. This book was followed by seven other cartoon books--in which Cat's appearance was minimal--over the next several years. Colourful Cats followed, decorating a range of merc

handise from calendars and t-shirts to magnets, plush, and beach towels. Cat had become the ultimate cat to collect--an iconic image, trusted friend, and producer of, well, happiness.

Pomegranate publishes TONNES of Kliban product, request a catalogue and see for yourself.

Progressive Greetings Live 09!

Congrats to the Progressive Greetings crew for pulling off a very pleasant 2 days show in sunny Kensington. Pomegranate enjoyed themselves and went away with a nice book of leads. The icing would have been to have a few more International leads in that book but as this is the only gripe, it was worth the time.

Congrats also to Lucie Pattinson from the Bookhouse in Thame who won a £50 Marks & Spencer Voucher in the Pomegranate Caption Competition, see her winning caption below.

POMEGRANATE RIGHT ON THE BUTTON .. with the big dilemma of the day:-

WHY WE NEED BEES,BEETLES,URCHINS AND WORMS
Knowledge Card Deck

We need those Bees and find out why in this deck of 48 Knowledge Cards.

Most of us think about the smallest denizens of the planet—the invertebrates—only when our houses are invaded by ants, or a bee buzzes by, or we discover a crab in a tide pool. But these organisms play integral roles in the biosphere we call home. Do you know which crustacean protects our salt marshes? Which beetle cattle ranchers rely on? Could a common mollusk help your dentist one day? Noted zoologist and author Frank Indiviglio knows a lot about the world’s smallest inhabitants and brings his expertise to bear in the 48 cards of this jam-packed quiz deck, letting us know just how and why all of our diminutive neighbors are so important.

GREAT FOR KIDS, well, everyone really ..... £5.95 and Available Now!
