Progressive Greetings Live 09!

Congrats to the Progressive Greetings crew for pulling off a very pleasant 2 days show in sunny Kensington. Pomegranate enjoyed themselves and went away with a nice book of leads. The icing would have been to have a few more International leads in that book but as this is the only gripe, it was worth the time.

Congrats also to Lucie Pattinson from the Bookhouse in Thame who won a £50 Marks & Spencer Voucher in the Pomegranate Caption Competition, see her winning caption below.

POMEGRANATE RIGHT ON THE BUTTON .. with the big dilemma of the day:-

WHY WE NEED BEES,BEETLES,URCHINS AND WORMS
Knowledge Card Deck

We need those Bees and find out why in this deck of 48 Knowledge Cards.

Most of us think about the smallest denizens of the planet—the invertebrates—only when our houses are invaded by ants, or a bee buzzes by, or we discover a crab in a tide pool. But these organisms play integral roles in the biosphere we call home. Do you know which crustacean protects our salt marshes? Which beetle cattle ranchers rely on? Could a common mollusk help your dentist one day? Noted zoologist and author Frank Indiviglio knows a lot about the world’s smallest inhabitants and brings his expertise to bear in the 48 cards of this jam-packed quiz deck, letting us know just how and why all of our diminutive neighbors are so important.

GREAT FOR KIDS, well, everyone really ..... £5.95 and Available Now!

The twelve images adapted for reproduction in this calendar—selected from chair designs, mosaic panels, leaded glass, textiles, and more—attest to the timeless appeal of Mackintosh’s artistic vision.

ELEGANT ENIGMAS The Art of Edward Gorey

Spent the weekend reading our new book 'Elegant Enigmas The Art of Edward Gorey'. What a treat this is from the small, lone girl in the right hand corner of the first page to the strange creature with man and coat on the end page.

By all appearances the world according to Edward Gorey (1925–2000) is a deeply troubling place. Dire plots filled with hapless victims and shadowy villains unfold on the eternally crepuscular stage created by Gorey’s exquisite, crosshatched ink drawings. Doom is always waiting in the wings. Yet despite its foreboding nature, this world is surprisingly inviting. Depictions of the demise of innocent children elicit laughter; clever couplets relating tales of mayhem are somehow delightful. One cannot help but feel uneasy about having so much fun perusing Gorey’s dark scenarios.

In Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey, more than 175 reproductions offer a rich review of his work, including samples from his own books, illustrations produced for other writers, theatrical sets and costume designs, and a wealth of individual pieces, many never before published. Sketches, typewritten manuscripts, doodles, and musings join the generous selection of finished works, which include his trademark finely detailed ink drawings and watercolors.
The text by Karen Wilkin, an expert on Gorey’s work and a friend of the artist, offers an intimate review of his career, with insights that provide a fresh understanding of Gorey’s life and art.

It's hardback with 124 pages and retails at £17.95. I guarantee you will re-visit this book many times! ISBN978-0-7649-4804-6

Christopher Marley was born in Covina, California, and grew up near Salem, Oregon. Upon his return, he balanced studying design at Brigham Young University with extended sabbaticals to work both on and off camera for scores of fashion brands such as Donna Karan, Gucci, and Giorgio Armani.

Over more than a decade, his assignments to dozens of countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas spawned a passionate drive to share the unending variety of surprising natural artefacts with an unsuspecting public through his artwork. In addition to insects, his mediums of design include fossils, minerals, botanicals, bones, and sea life. His work has been featured in numerous magazines and is sold through hundreds of galleries, stores, and showrooms around the World.

Jane's favourite artist...

"The artist whose work really appeals to my personal taste is Robert Bateman and the wonderful wildlife illustrations he captures on canvas.

The detail in his pictures is so accurate, you could almost reach out and touch the creature or bird he has painted. I love nature and he portrays nature at its very best."

- Jane

Ley's Favourite Artist.....

"For me great art is not only a work, which immediately grabs your senses and shakes them up but one which endures. Those images that you go back to time and time again because you see or sense something different in the picture each time you look.

One artist who does this time and time again is Edward Hopper. At first his paintings may look a little empty, - but it is the expansive 'room' in his paintings which hold the enigmatic force of his work. He situates objects and characters in strange, isolated positions so that you make up the story of the image. Brilliant!"

Pomegranate staff's favourite artists and why...

Over the next few weeks I'll be getting some of the Pomegranate Europe staff to write about their favourite artists. We'll start off with mine....

"
My taste in art is always changing as I’m exposed to such a variety working here at Pomegranate. I believe art needs to be interesting, whether it’s the image itself or the thoughts provoked by it. At the moment the artist I’m enjoying most is Escher. I find the optical illusions within his work keep me both entertained and puzzled. With the repeating, transforming patterns and never ending staircases you can really immerse yourself in the image and get lost in his disobedience to gravity and physics." - Dan (me)

Like Escher? Don't like Escher? Would like to say a few words on your own favourite artist? - Please don't hesitate to leave us a comment. - We love to hear your opinions on art.

An important new release for this season is our new set of Sacred Journey cards. A constant best selling calendar title is our Sacred Journey planner, which enlightens and inspires the user while encouraging their spiritual growth. This very popular title will soon be available in a set of greeting cards. The ability to send a little well-chosen, spiritual guidance or support to a friend or relative, on one of these beautiful cards will be useful for anyone with a connection to their spiritual feelings.

An old line to return to Pomegranate this summer is our mouse mat range. Featuring work by some of our most published artists, this previously discontinued range is back with a vengeance. The line currently holds over 15 titles, both new and re-worked, by artists such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Escher and Tiffany, not to mention Christopher Marley’s exquisite creatures design. We also re-worked the mouse mat pricing to fit in better with the UK and European market and have given each mat an individual backing board with some info on the artist / design.

Our Knowledge Card™ range has been expanded once again, with the addition of 7 new titles such as 2 shakes of a lamb’s tail, The Eco quiz deck, and the follow up to our top selling, movie quiz knowledge card deck. Great lines from great movies vol.2 promises to be an instant hit! We’ve taken the ever popular, timeless movie quiz from vol.1, and extended the range of questions to fill a whole new deck.

Further additions have been made to our designer gift-wrap range, making this a quickly expanding, extremely well received range, now containing 13 stunning designs. We also offer a free dump bin display unit on orders of 72+ rolls.
