Answer to question 1.

Jane Austen (English, 1775 - 1817)

Today one of the most celebrated writers of the Western canon, Jane Austen published her novels anonymously to avoid the tarnished reputation of a woman writer. The seventh of eight children, Austen was born in Hampshire, England, and spent most of her life close to home. She began writing as a child to amuse herself and her family. Known for their perfect form, her books - including Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park - Infuse everyday, commonplace events with humor, irony, and drama. Her heroines are bright, moral young women who struggle for love and happiness in a society where men inherit familial wealth and marriage determines social status.

Though her characters ultimately achieve satisfaction, Austen - who never married - was no true romantic: "I could not seriously sit down to write a serious romance under any other motive than to save my life."

Quiz Time!

Over the coming weeks I will be posting a series of questions and answers from some of the great titles in our Knowledge card range.

This first set of questions are from our "Who was she? Noteable Women in Literature" quiz deck. The deck contains 48 cards, each packed with bite-sized info and trivia in a question and answer format.

I'll post the first question now, and the answer in a weeks time. Good luck!

Question 1.

Who was she?

"Writing was considered an unladylike endeavor at the turn of the nineteenth century, so this observer of social conventions wrote on small pieces of paper that could quickly be hidden under a blotter when guests visited."

We wish you a merry.....

OK, so it's not quite Christmas yet!

Nevertheless, the brand new Pomegranate Christmas Catalogue is almost ready.

Christmas 2006 was the first that the UK and Europe had seen of the Pomegranate Christmas range for some time. The stunning, festive cards are back again this year and from the look of the current interest, they will indeed be here to stay! That’s not surprising when you see the catalogue. Many of Pomegranate’s top artists can be found with a festive twist in the Christmas range. From Kliban’s Cats playing festive games and trying to stay warm, to Edward Gorey’s darker views on Christmas, Santa, and the festive period.

However, the Christmas range is not only about our acclaimed artist’s work. We also publish a huge selection of Christmas cards featuring beautiful photography of the natural world at Christmas and the amazing animals within it, in association with Sierra Club. You’ll find Penguins, Polar Bears and Arctic Foxes, all posing for these stunning images, which can all be found in the back of the catalogue. A portion of the proceeds from all Sierra Club sales goes towards preserving and protecting the planet.

Christmas card catalogues will be available from April onwards, and we are always happy to take advanced orders in preparation for Christmas. We offer the individual cards either as singles (in cellophane bag, with envelope) or in boxes of 12 with envelopes.
